The Eastern Legacy Trail Initiative documents and preserves the often-overlooked eastern portion of the Lewis and Clark story. While much attention focuses on the westward journey, the expedition’s roots in Virginia, Kentucky, and the Ohio Valley are equally significant. This project identifies, researches, and promotes the historic sites where Lewis and Clark planned, recruited, and eventually returned to report their findings to President Jefferson.
Project Goals
- Document all Lewis and Clark-related sites east of the Mississippi
- Create interpretive materials for partner sites
- Develop driving tour routes connecting historic locations
- Establish partnerships with state and local historical organizations
Current Focus Areas
The initiative currently focuses on sites in Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio where both the outbound preparation and triumphant return journey took place. Key locations include the Falls of the Ohio, Cumberland Gap, and various taverns and homes where the explorers stayed.
