Celestial Observations and Ft. Jefferson, Confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi River

Clark’s Field Notes During five (5) days at the Mouth of the Ohio Lewis and Clark made celestial observations, drew maps, wrote reports, and described how eastern American Indians were already migrating west of the Mississippi River. The captains visited Old Ft. Jefferson, built by George Rogers Clark, William’s older brother, during the Revolutionary War. (1)(2) Clark had previously surveyed and drawn a map of the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in 1796 and had been at the confluence on other occasions.
